Review Sheet for Math Quiz 3, Maestro Summer Program 2016
Colorado State University, Pueblo

It would be a good idea to be comfortable with the problems from the math worksheets you did this week. In addition, here are some practice problems you might look at for the material discussed in class on Thursday.

Here are topics we discussed:

  1. Defined the conjugate of a complex number.
  2. The Zero Product Property.
  3. Solving quadratic equations by factoring.
  4. What the graph of a quadratic function $y=f(x)$ looks like
    1. general shape — how to tell whether it points up or down by looking at the coefficients.
    2. The relationship between the $x$-intercept(s) and solutions of the equation $f(x)=0$.
    3. symmetry
    4. location of the max or min
  5. Solving quadratic equations by completing the square.
  6. Applications of quadratic functions (solving equations, finding maxes or mins) in areas such as:
    1. falling bodies, which following the law Galileo found: $x=\frac{1}{2} a t^2+v_0 t + x_0$, where $a$ is the [constant] acceleration of gravity, $v_0$ is the starting [velocity] and $x_0$ is the starting position
    2. business, such as finding a maximum revenue when the demand curve is known (or guessed)
    3. finding shapes, such as rectangles, for particular uses, like houses, fields, or picture frames, with properties such as a fixed perimeter and desired area
You may bring one page of notes to the test. It may have anything you like on it — equations, definitions, examples, poetry, diagrams — but should be written in your own handwriting. You must hand in your page of notes with your test.

You may also use a graphing calculator or other similar electronic device.
