Review Sheet for Test I, Fall 2015
Colorado State University, Pueblo
Math 156 — Introduction to Statistics
Definitions
Terms you should know -- be able to state clearly what they mean, recognize
them in examples, and create your own examples of them
- individuals
- [Random] variable [RV]
- categorical or quantitative RV
- distribution
- pie chart
- bar graph
- histogram
- stem plot
- qualitative description of a distribution:
- shape,
- center, and
- spread
- outliers
- quantitative measures of center and spread:
- mean $\bar{x}$ and median (and mode)
- quartiles $Q_1$ and $Q_3$
- variance $s^2$, standard deviation $s$, IQR,
and range
- NOTE: on the TI calculators, the standard deviation is displayed
in 1-Var Stats as SX.
- sensitivity of the above to outliers
- the five number summary
- boxplots (=box-and-whisker plots)
- the 1.5 IQR rule for outliers
- density curves
- the Normal distribution: shape, symmetry
- center $\mu$ of the Normal distribution
- "width" $\sigma$ of the Normal distribution -- how to see it on the curve
- the 68-95-99.7 Rule
- standardizing a Normal RV (and doing this backwards if necessary)
- scatterplots, explanatory variable, and
response variable
- the direction, form, and strength of a relationship
in a scatterplot
- scatterplot outliers
- the correlation coefficient $r$, properties
- the [least squares] regression line
- for a line: slope, $y$-intercept
- interpretation of $r^2$
- residuals
- extrapolation
- lurking variables
- words to live by: "Correlation does not imply causation"
- ecological correlation
Things to know how to do
- given some data:
- make any of the graphs mentioned above, by hand or with help from
your calculator
- compute any of the quantitative statistical measures above, by hand
or with help from your calculator
- interpret/apply any of the above qualitative terms for the given data
- know the strengths and weaknesses of the various graphical and
quantitative statistical measures above, and chose the appropriate one in
a particular situation
- use your calculator appropriately!
Format of the test
There will be several problems from the material corresponding to each chapter
we've done in the textbook, of a level of difficulty and wording similar to
the problems which you have done for homework and quizzes. The total points
for the test will be more than 100, you can choose which 100 points you want
to do out of the available problems.
Don't forget your calculator, you will need it!
