Math 126 — Calculus and Analytic Geometry I, Section 1
Homework Assignments & Course Schedule
Here is a link back to the course
syllabus/policy page.
In the following all sections and page numbers refer to the required course
textbook, Calculus (4th ed.), by Robert T. Smith and Roland B.
Minton.
This schedule is subject to change, but should be accurate at any
moment for at least a week into the future.
For each day, please read the section(s) named in the plan, before
that day, while the homework is due that day.
Things to remember about homework:
It is due each day in class or, at the latest, by 3:00pm in my
office — or under my office door if I'm not there when you come by.
Hand in the Writing Emphasis problem(s) (indicated below as
"17WE", for example) and the
Peer Consultation problems (all the rest) separately.
Every day a Big Idea sentence, or up to a paragraph, is also
due. This should also be on its own page (or fraction thereof).
Remember, exposition is important in your written work. Even in the
PC problems, you should show your work, and take care to write only
true statements — e.g., when you use an "=", the terms
should actually be equal, etc. Please also make it easier to
identify your final result by putting it in a box.
Your e-mail address. (Please give me one that you actually check
fairly frequently, since I may use it to contact you during the
term.)
Your year/program/major at CSUP.
What you intend to do after CSUP, in so far as you have an idea.
Past math classes you've had.
Other math/science classes intend to take in future semesters.
Other classes you're taking at the moment.
The reason you are taking this course.
Your favorite mathematical subject.
Your favorite mathematical result/theorem/technique/example/problem.
Anything else you think I should know (disabilities, employment
or other things that take a lot of time, etc.).
[Optional:] The best book you have read recently.
I will only enter your name into my gradebook and give you your "late
HW passes" when I get this e-mail, so you really need to do this
assignment ASAP. Please take a moment to be complete (indeed, be as
expansive as you can) — the more information I have about you,
the better I can adapt the course to your needs and interests.

how did your home study on regular days of the term help or hurt
your performance?
what about your study before test days (or even quiz days)?
how did your approach to homework help or hurt? — here you
might address your attitude, your scheduling, your post-HW habits,
etc.
was the MLC useful? a private tutor? working with classmates? coming
to your instructor's office?
were your habits regarding class time useful or not —
in terms of regularity of attendance, your note-taking (or
daydreaming) practices during class time, whether you asked
questions or waited for others to ask, etc.
your experiences around the in-class tests (and quizzes): did you
study enough/the right things? did you perform up to your potential
on the test paper? if not, was it because of panic or carelessness
or something else you can keep an eye out for in the future?
further habits/practices/attitudes of yours which have impacted your
success in this class (and other math classes)...
T: Read §5.2; hand in HW51 §5.1: 8, 10, 20,
34WE
W: Read §5.2; hand in HW52 §5.2: 2, 6, 18,
26WE
Θ:CLASS CANCELED: IT'S MATH DAY!!
F:Quiz 10 today. Read §5.3; hand in HW53
§5.2: 4, 12, 20, 28WE
Thursday, December 8th, 8-10:20am in our usual classroom:
You will have the entire exam period to work on the smaller, more
purely computational problems from section II of the
final review sheet. Possible points
max out at 120 on this section of the final, again with ample choice
of which problems you want to do, and with points beyond the 120
going into your extra-credit total.
